The actions of these local authorities is understandable but only seeks to address the symptom.

The rise in second homes was driven by government tinkering with stamp duty.

The rise in properties bought for or converted to holiday lets is a wholly predictable free market response to the increase in taxation due to S24 mortgage interest relief restriction and stricter regulations for long term rentals.

Landlords would be happy to return to longer lets once LHAs are brought to current rental levels and S24 is revoked.
