Generation Rent to assist with Labour housing policy

The launch of the review of the private rental sector for the Labour Party, undertaken by Stephen Cowan, the Labour leader of Hammersmith and Fulham council in London, is attracting attention ahead of its scheduled release on May 15. Former shadow housing secretary Lisa Nandy commissioned Cowan to write the report, though she was dropped as shadow housing spokesperson by party leader Sir Kier Starmer last September.

The event, chaired by London Labour MP Karen Buck, will include speakers such as William Hunter, described as a retired barrister and Labour activist, and Ben Twomey, CEO at Generation Rent. Despite being commissioned by a member of the shadow cabinet, no Labour front-bench spokespersons are expected to attend the launch event.

The report, completed before the recent local elections, was held back to prevent confusion with official party housing policy. According to sources cited by LabourList, the review is considered independent and is anticipated to include bold proposals, although it is not expected to recommend rent controls.
