Yesterday (Wed Nov 22nd) the chancellor announced that initial 7 day waiting period for Universal Credit was to be abolished, which brings the wait time down from 7 weeks to 6.

Today (Thursday 23rd) the Works and Pensions Secretary, David Gauke, has announced that any tenant who has opted to have their benefit paid direct to the landlord will automatically have the same facility in Universal Credit.

The Minister issued a statement to the Commons that said: “Those people who already have an alternative payment arrangement, the presumption will be that will continue and the money will therefore go to the landlord rather than the tenant.”

In addition it was also announced that anyone changing from benefits to UC will have their rents paid for the first two weeks when starting their initial claim.
